Food Education

Let's talk about food!  I know I talked about some of this stuff yesterday in my TEDtalk Tuesday stories (if haven't seen it yet, I highlighted it on my Instagram page @kenzhalliday), but I wanted to go into it a little deeper because of how important it is!  So, we are going to have a food education!

If you are trying to lose weight or change your eating habits the first thing I would tell you do do is to track your food for a week.  Oftentimes we eat foods we think are good, but really aren't.  I know there have been several times where I am at a restaurant and I order a salad because I am trying to be healthy and it turns out the salad is even more unhealthy than the burger!  Now, I am not saying don't eat salads, but be aware of what is in them.  Most dressings (especially at restaurants) are very fatty.  This goes for tons of other stuff too!  One thing I like to do so I can be aware of what I am eating is to track my food in My Fitness Pal.  This way I can see all of nutritional info even if I am eating out.  It becomes so much easier to make changes when you know the foods that are keeping you down!

I can count (many times) when there's been a day where I felt like I didn't eat very much or I tried to eat super healthy, then I logged my food and I was shocked when I saw numbers that didn't match up with what I thought I ate!  I think it is so common to not even know how much we are eating!  The only way to now how much you are really eating is to track it.  And I am not saying you have to track your food forever, but track your food until you have a good idea of how much and what you should be eating everyday (because odds are you eat the same foods/meals a lot).  Awareness and knowledge are key!!  Once you are aware of what is in foods, it becomes so much easier to make those little changes and see the differences you haven't been able to see before!

So, that is my challenge to you all for this week!  Find out what you are eating (and how much)!  There are tons of great apps out there so find one you like (or do it by hand) and start taking control of your diet!  There are no more excuses...you have all of the tools you need to get on the right track!
