Grocery List Planning

Hello all! Happy Wednesday!  Food is such an important part of our is necessary for us to live!  Sometimes it can be so tough to even know what to buy at the grocery store.  Today I am sharing with you my grocery list must-haves.

Categories to check off:

  1. Good grains
  2. Fruits
  3. Veggies
  4. Protein
  5. Dairy
  6. Other (aka ingredients for meals--spices, sauces, ect.)

Some of my favorites in each of these categories-

Good grains:

  • whole wheat pasta
  • quinoa
  • oatmeal
  • brown rice
  • whole wheat bread
  • rice cakes


  • apples
  • bananas
  • strawberries
  • raspberries
  • blueberries


  • lettuce
  • zucchini
  • squash
  • carrots
  • spinach


  • ground beef
  • ground turkey
  • ground chicken
  • chicken breast
  • steak


  • skim milk
  • eggs
  • greek yogurt
  • Babybel cheese

Other: (there are so many things that can go in this category...we usually get one thing of healthier treats for the week to cover our sugar cravings)

  • peanut butter
  • flour
  • marinara sauce
  • salad dressing
  • Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches 


This is basically how I plan my grocery lists.  I decide on the meals we are going to have for the week for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks then I categorize them into these areas making sure we have a good amount in each category.  I even try to fit our snacks into these categories (things like rice cakes, celery and pb, hard boiled eggs) to help us stay on track when we are eating our snacks.  I have found that when I make my grocery list with "good" foods, I stay on the outermost part of the store 90% of the trip.  When I don't plan out our meals for the week and go to the store I find myself going up and down all of the aisles more and end up only getting 50-60% of my foods from the outermost part.  If you think about it most of what you need is on the outside: fruits and veggies, meat, and dairy.  The only things I usually have to go down the aisles for are my good grains and my "other".

I can tell you how much of a difference planning my grocery trips have made in what we eat each week!  We eat so much healthier AND we have delicious meals!  What you buy from the store is what you are going to eat.  If you refrain from buying processed foods, sugary cereals, candy, etc. then odds are you won't eat it as much because it is not easily accessible.  This has really made the difference in my life because I love my sweets, but when I don't have them in the house then I eat them much less.  For those days when I really have a sugar craving and actually drive all the way to the store just to get a treat I am not mad about it because I know that it doesn't happen a lot.

Anywayssss, the key to good grocery shopping is definitely planning and preparing!  I challenge you to plan out your meals for the week and make a grocery list before you go and see how much different your cart looks than when you don't!

Ohh, and never go grocery shopping when you are hungry! Bad things will happen!! Trust me, I would know!! haha  I have been the victim of that many times!
