Listen to your Body


Happy Wednesday!  I have been having a fantastic week...and not because anything spectacular has happened, but I have been super positive this week and it has really made a difference for me!

Today I want to talk about listening to your body.  I had an experience last week that made me decide to write about this because of how important it is!

Last week I had KILLER workouts on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Thursday morning comes along and I am so sore that it hurt just to get out of bed (and I am talking about everything - legs, booty, abs, and upper body).  I went to the gym in the morning not motivated at all, but did my workout anyways (even though it wasn't the best).  As the day goes on my shoulders started hurting.  At first it was just a little bit, but by the end of the day I couldn't lift my arms above 90 degrees (pain-wise not sore-wise).

Well Friday morning rolls around and things are not better.  Everything from before was sore and now I am even more sore from Thursday!  My body was fatigued, my mind was worn out, and I was just exhausted!  I decided that what would help me most is a recovery day (I usually do resistance HIIT on Friday's).  For me sometimes a recovery day can be a rest day or sometimes that just means finding something to do that will help my body and mind feel better.  That specific day consisted of 30 minutes of spin and 30 minutes of stretching.

YOU GUYS, I can't stress how important it is to listen to your body!!!  When your body is asking for a rest, take it!!!  (But, that doesn't mean don't go to the gym when you're just tired or sore). There is a difference between being sore and being in pain.  Pain can consist of things like aches, throbbing, sharp pain, and much more.  It is absolutely necessary that you get to know your body.  Learn to know when you can push through things and when to back off.  

When your body gives you certain symptoms, that means your body needs a break.  TAKE THE BREAK!! It will save you from burning out physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually! Rest and rejuvenation will help to prepare you to live out your life and fulfill your goals without the burnout.  

On the other hand, we all have bad days where we have no motivation.  No motivation and being tired are COMPLETELY different!  The days when you go to the gym even when you lack motivation are actually the most important days.  Those are the days that you are actually getting stronger!

Moral of the day: Get to know your body and listen to what you NEED (not necessarily what you WANT).  The truth is a day off (when needed) will be 10X more productive and it will help you reach your goals FASTER than if you force your body to do something it doesn't want to.
